Hard News Statistics Exercise

Vegetarian sandwiches have the most saturated fat out of all sandwiches available in Melbourne take away food outlets according to the Australian Nutrition Foundation.

Turkey with mustard sandwiches have the least total fat and saturated fat, meaning they are the healthiest sandwich available according to the Australian Nutrition Foundation.

These results come from an Australian Nutrition Foundation study led by chief nutritionist Jane Smith examining 170 sandwiches from 30 random Melbourne food outlets.

Mrs Smith said tuna salad sandwiches have the “equivalent of three McDonald’s Quarter Pounders, fat-wise” because they are “drowning in about one-third of a cup of mayonnaise”.

“People tend to think of a sandwich as just a bite to eat, but many shops are giving you a dinner’s worth of fat,” said Mrs Smith.

The study also found Turkey club sandwiches to have high levels of fat and sodium, comprising about half of the daily fat limit for adults.

Ham with mustard sandwiches were found to have the highest levels of sodium, making up nearly the entire daily sodium limit for adults.

But the study doesn’t account for healthy fats, meaning salad sandwiches with natural calories could be labelled as unhealthy despite actually being healthy.
